Apple Updates iPod Lineup

iPod nano - all new model with larger screen capable of video playback

iPod classic - hard drive iPods feature larger drives, thinner design

iPod touch - based on iPhone with Wi-Fi capabilities

iPhone - 4GB model dropped, 8GB model gets $200 price cut to $399

iTunes 8 - new version of software with support for new models

Tape Findings, and Found Magazine Website

Two fun finds today...the first is Found, a website devoted to found objects. According to their About section:

We collect found stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework, to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, doodles-- anything that gives a glimpse into someone else's life. Anything goes.
We certainly didn't invent the idea of found stuff being cool. Every time we visit our friends in other towns, someone's always got some kind of unbelievable discovered note or photo on their fridge. We decided to make a bunch of projects so that everyone can check out all the strange, hilarious and heartbreaking things people have picked up and passed our way.

As an off-shoot of this site, there is another one, called Tape Findings. Now this one really appealed to me. I can still remember being a kid, and my little sister and I playing around recording our voices on a Radio Shack Realistic Cassette Recorder. We'd record anything, really -- me reading the paper, or the latest Guinness Book of World Records. Anyhow, this web site brings together these lost-and-forgotten tapes, and like Found, they can be banal or funny, serious or strange, but wow, what a great site for the voyeur in us all.

Apple Updates: Macs, iWork, iLife

Hello again, Apple fans. Apple, Inc. announced some updates to hardware and software yesterday, and for a more complete overview than what I could provide, I thought I'd list here the opinions of the gang over at Small Dog Electronics, who put together some great Mac newsletters. I've used some of their content before, and I really like their writing style, so take it away, Small Dog!

New iMacs!

Today Apple announced greatly updated iMacs. They featuring brand-new
Extreme 2 Duo Intel processors (more on those below), a boldly
refreshed pro design featuring 20" or 24" glass displays encased in
aluminum, an all-new keyboard and iLife 08 (more on that below, too!)

Standard configurations are:

20" iMac with a 2.0 GHz processor, 250 GB hard drive and ATI Radeon
HD 2400XT video card - $1199

20" iMac with a 2.4Ghz processor, 320 GB hard drive and ATI Radeon HD
2600 Pro - $1499

24" iMac with a 2.4Ghz display and 320GB hard drive and ATI Radeon HD
2600 Pro video card - $1799

All models come standard with 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.0 wireless
capability, an 8x Superdrive, 1 GB of RAM, and the new Apple
Keyboard. They can be customized with up to 4 GB of RAM, and up to a
1 TB hard drive.

The new iMacs feature three USB 2.0 ports, a firewire 400 port, a
firewire 800 port, a gigabit ethernet port, mini-DVI port, an audio
in and audio out port. All models also continue to feature a built-in
iSight camera and microphone. You can run a second display up to 23"
from the mini-DVI port.

The new glass displays are glossy, and the resolution appears to be
the same as current 20" and 24" iMacs - 1680x1050 and 1920x1200
respectively.

Previous to this announcement today there was a lot of speculation
around the death of the Mac mini. Many though Apple was going to
phase it out of their product line but today instead of doing that
Apple refreshed it.

The new Mac minis include Core 2 Duo chips which are up to 33% faster
then previous chips, allows 4GBs of RAM, has 4 USB ports, has digital
in/out audio and has a Gigabit ethernet port. The new minis also come
with iLife ‘08.

According to the Apple tech specs page (http://www.apple.com/macmini/
specs.html) on the Mac mini it does not come with 802.11n wireless
networking which seems a bit odd to me. Overall it’s a nice upgrade
and I would love to replace my Xserve with one of these.

Apple also announced a new version of iLife, now called iLife 08. As
an iLife 06 fan, I have to say this new version looks incredible.
Here is a brief rundown of the new features in each iLife application.

iMovie 08 - iMovie is being released as an all-new application, and
has a new interface and icon to show it. The app is now centered
around an iPhoto-like library, where you can catalog all your video.
This is something I've always wanted - it should be very convenient
to keep all the video on your Mac in one central location, ready to
be watched, scanned, and even edited.

iMovie now claims to accept video from "any source," and the video
can be mixed & matched in single projects. It also features a newly
expanded "Share" menu, with updated options for outputting video to
iPod, iPhone, Apple TV - and direct exporting to YouTube. The YouTube
feature is going to be huge. Steve Jobs is telling people to skip the
DVD, and exchange high-res video files computer to computer, or
computer to TV. iMovie also integrates with the new .Mac iWeb Gallery
- which I'll discuss below.

There are actually dozens of added features, upgrades, and
enhancements throughout iMovie 08. It really is a whole new
application. We'll explore iMovie in depth in the future; you can

iPhoto 08 also received some updating love. A new feature called
Events allows you to easily group and organize huge iPhoto libraries.
New photo editing features include noise reduction, white balance
adjustment, selective improvement, guided cropping and more. You can
choose to automatically show or hide photos based on your star rating
(you do rate all of your photos with stars, right?) There are new
books and calendars available (including much larger calendars than
the previous options.) Photos can now be exported to a new .Mac Web
Gallery, which promises a better way to post and organize photos
online. You can contribute to the gallery "from anywhere" you have

Garageband is updated with a slew of new features. The biggest all-
new feature is the Magic Garageband. This is a "virtual onstage band"
that you can jam and record with. There are new interactive
instruments that can be edited in real time. There is a new multitake
feature. Garageband can now record high-fidelity 24-bit/44.1kHz
audio. There is a built-in Mastering Engineer to make your songs
sound like a commercial CD. There is a new visual EQ to allow you to
graphically adjust frequencies for each track by clicking and
dragging EQ bands. Parameter Automation sets the parameters of
instruments and effects to change at multiple points within a song.
You can now organize the structure of a song by using predefined
sections (intro, verse, chorus, and bridge), print software
instrument tracks as music notation with automatically formatted
staffs and complete measures, and display the name of chords in real
time as you play on a USB keyboard. Also - you can now export tracks

I'm glad to see that iWeb has been updated. First, you can finally
easily switch iWeb themes. This was not possible in the previous
version of iWeb. There are eight new themes to go along with this
feature.

There are new animated web album pages. You can put 500 photos online
per album. iWeb makes it easy to integrate Google Maps and Google
Adsense on your web pages. A new feature called Web Widgets makes it
easy to embed a snippet of live content from another website on your
iWeb page. Web Widgets would include YouTube videos, stock tickers,
weather reports, and more.

Finally, Apple has made it easier to use a personal domain name with

iDVD received the least love in this upgrade. The main feature is
new, pro-quality DVD encoding. Apple says "the new professional-
quality option in iDVD uses advanced encoding technology to maintain
the highest possible quality for DVDs that are near or at the disc’s
capacity."

There are 10 brand-new themes, and the all of the older themes are
also compatible. The interactive "drop" editor has been updated. Menu
navigation, real-time preview, and theme switching are all faster.
Indeed, iDVD touts better performance throughout rather than a glut

iLife '08 requires a PowerPC G4 (733MHz or faster for iDVD), PowerPC
G5, or Intel Core processor, 12MB (1GB recommended) of RAM, and Mac
OS X v10.4.9 or later.

Numbers and Pages and (Key)notes, galore!

I have been waiting for an update to iWork for what seems like
forever. So, I was happy to see Apple finally announce an update
today that includes revamped versions of Pages and Keynote, and a new
application called Numbers.

Pages is a word processor that has style; more specifically, it has
nicely designed templates that make it sort of a word processor-slash-
desktop publishing program. (I like to think of it as an InDesign
“lite” or something like that.) In Pages ‘08, more templates have
been added, and Apple has declared you will be able to “switch easily
between word processing and page layout modes.” Sounds great to
someone who loves to multitask.

Keynote is designed for presentations, and is fantastic for the same
reason—it’s really easy to use, and the templates actually look nice!
There are several new features to Keynote ‘08, such as new effects
and transitions between slides. It also looks as though slide
manipulation has gotten a little slicker, too: you’ll be able to
remove a background with one click. And, if you need a little help,
new video and animation support will add punch to an otherwise
lackluster presentation!

Now on to the newbie: Numbers ‘08 adds spreadsheet functionality to
the iWork suite, which it had previously lacked. Those of you who use
(or have used) Appleworks know that it was a feature not brought over
into Pages. In reality, I don’t use spreadsheets too often in my
every day life, but it seems to me that Apple needed to remedy this.
Numbers is touted as “spreadsheets the Mac way,” which has to mean
both its ease-of-use, and an impressive, clean interface! (I don’t
think Apple will disappoint.) Some of the features include:
customizable templates, tables, charts, an interactive print view,
and “effortless” compatibility with Microsoft Excel.

iWork ‘08 will be available for $79.99… we’ll add more info as soon
as we can get our hands on it!

Shorpy, a Vintage Photo Blog

Sure, there are many fine sites out there that showcase contemporary photography, such as Flickr. But what about all those cool vintage photos that we have laying around, maybe in old photo albums, or ones acquired in garage sales? Well, now they have their day in the sun.

Shorpy, billed as "The 100-year-old photo blog", showcases all sorts of cool vintage photos. You can create an account and add your own, if you like. The site states that they are particularly interested in photos "from the dawn of photography to the 1940s". Check it out!

On the official Google Blog today, I saw a post that discusses the many services Google offers to clients who have varying accessibility issues -- whether sight or mobility-based. This list shows a little more than a dozen of their various services (hyperlinked to the service itself), then also includes a link at the end to join the accessible Google user group and make your voice heard on various topics.

I love to find companies that go the extra mile on accessibility issues, whether they are located online, or in brick-and-mortar buildings. This is also another reason I love Apple, Inc., as they have always had a team devoted to these very issues as well.

Garage Sale America

OK, let's switch gears a bit. Here's a fun site. Garage sales have been around forever -- well, at least as long as people have had garages, I guess. With the explosion of antique collecting and the promise of finding that potential treasure in your neighbor's basement, plus the recent popularity of shows such as "Antiques Roadshow", the garage sale is as popular as ever.

Well, Bruce Littlefield has taken it upon himself to travel to garage sales from coast to coast, and as many as he can find. Then he reports on his finds on a blog, and the wonderful website that surrounds it. You'll find a spot to list your own garage sale, find others, do's and don'ts, and much more. The site is beautifully put together and a pleasure to navigate.

ARTICLE: David Pogue - iPhone FAQ

David Pogue, technology columnist for the New York Times, took a look at the iPhone in his "Circuits" column yesterday, and today he's back with a really good article that reads as a F.A.Q. for all of us eager users that can't wait to get their mitts on one, and have questions about what our hundreds-of-dollars flying out of our wallets are going to get us.

On the bright side, he mentions that some folks will ultimately say "neat, but, it's missing (fill in the blank)". He notes:

Apple has indicated that it intends to add features through free software updates, so the real, secret answer to some of the “no” answers is actually, “Coming soon.”

The first day of summer is upon us, and you know what that means -- we're just days away from the release of Apple's iPhone! (Wait, what? That's not what it means? Oh. Well, anyway...)

I think it's safe to say that no techie gadget (certainly no cell phone) has ever seen so much anticipation, so much pressure, to be the end-all and be-all of everything cool in this world than the iPhone does at this moment. Yes, it will be released, and there will be those folks that will buy one on the first day, the first minute, the first second that it's available. Heck, there's probably people camped out at Apple Stores right now. So what is it about this gadget? Apple says it's the best iPod they've ever made, that, oh, by the way, happens to also be an internet appliance and, oh yeah, the best phone ever. I'd love to say that I will personally test all these features myself and report here, but it's just a wee too steep for my budget at the moment. But hey, we should be able to play with one at the Apple Store once they become available (at least I hope so.)

However, until it launches, I say enjoy the hype. I know of no other company that inspires such brand loyalty and can whip the fan base into a lather than Apple, Inc can. After its release, there will almost undoubtedly be some bell or whistle that doesn't work exactly as advertised, or was left off completely. But until then, we have the image of a perfect product, and Apple can do no wrong.

Free Software: Bryce 5.5 for Mac & Windows

You gotta love free stuff, right? Well, it's not Free Friday yet, but this one is too good to sit on. Bryce is an application you use to create 3-D landscapes and more. From the product download page description:

It turns out that that Daz 3-D, the company that makes Bryce, is touting version 6 now, so what better way to get folks interested in maybe upgrading to v6 than by offering v5.5 for free? Niiice. It's available for Mac and Windows platforms off the downloads.com website.

WWDC '07 Keynote Highlights

On Monday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave the keynote address at this year's Apple World Wide Developers Conference. This meeting is targeted at the companies and programmers who develop software for the Macintosh platform. Steve's presentation focused on key features of the MacOS X 10.5 Leopard that will be released in October.

MacOS X 10.5 Leopard Highlights

The new release of MacOS X will feature an extensively refined desktop and Finder, bringing many of the features of the iTunes interface to the Mac desktop. It also features easier to use file sharing, the new Time Machine backup utility, Spaces - a screen virtualization tool, and Quick Look that allows you to preview entire documents without opening them in an application.

Safari 3.0 Beta for Mac and Windows

Apple also released a beta version of the Safari web browser for not only the Mac platform, but for Windows XP and Vista as well. However, I'd caution you that this beta version has already been found to be fairly buggy, so be cautious.

Steve Jobs was interviewed by Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal yesterday at the D: All Things Digital Executive Conference. Amongst the topics were the upcoming iPhone release (Steve coyly confirming that it would ship in June, even if it was the last day in June), iPod/iTunes, and AppleTV.

Hopefully, you've had a chance to visit an Apple Store, the real brick-and-mortar stores that sell and show-off Apple technology to its brilliant best. Once in the store, you might notice something called the "Genius Bar" towards the back. What is that, exactly? Do they serve really cool drinks with techie names back there?

Well, actually, the Genius Bar is where you can get expert Apple advice on software or hardware questions or problems. The folks trained to be such experts are called, naturally enough, Apple Geniuses. How did they reach that exalted position? Lots of hard work at the mother ship, my friend.

GAMING NEWS: Blizzard Announces StarCraft II

As noted on macworld.com, Blizzard Entertainment today released news of its latest game in the pipeline. And it is the sequel to one of their best-selling games of all time, StarCraft. Enter StarCraft II. Besides the fact that I came to know Blizzard through playing StarCraft before the WarCraft series (and now the World of WarCraft MMORPG), I'm stoked that they are developing the Mac version and the Windows version at the same time. This epic game set in outer space pits three playable races against each other for domination of their corner of the universe. Many sleepless nights will soon ensue.

SuTree: Free Video "How To" Lessons

I like this one a lot...I've run across some websites that tell you, via text descriptions, how to do certain tasks, like tie a necktie, solder a wire, cook an omelet -- and they are fine for what they are. But, if you're a visual learner like me, you tend to do better when you can see someone showing you how to do something.

SuTree is that site. From the home page, it describes itself as:

Very cool. Also, you can add comments and rate the training as well. Pretty sweet! Now I can learn to sketch that cartoon cat!

Microsoft Office/Mac - 2007 Converter Delayed

Microsoft announced yesterday that the plug-in/converter to allow Office Mac 2004 to read the new Office/Windows 2007 file formats has been delayed yet again. The company indicated that a full set of converters will not be available under after the release of Office/Mac 2008 later this year.

Calling a Photoshop Goddess or God

Hello. Mac power user I may be, but one thing I haven't got a handle on is Photoshop. In my job at the Help Desk, I just don't have a use for it on a daily basis. I take some training in it, play with it, then come back to my job and, because I don't have a personal copy, the skills just fly out the window. I will be purchasing Photoshop Elements, I've decided, but that will have to wait for a paycheck or two. In the meantime, one part of this new Blogger template I'm using is driving me nuts. Yep, that obviously un-Mac-like laptop up in the top right of the blog. As this was how it came out of the box, I figured it wouldn't be such a big deal. But it bugs me now. A lot.

So, what to do? Well, I thought about it, and I happen to know (virtually, that is) some folks that might be able to help -- that's you! Certainly someone out there is a Photoshop guru that can scrape out that Windows-running tin can up there and replace it instead with a similarly-oriented shot of a MacBook Pro instead. Up for the challenge? Here's what my xml template tells me is the URL of the pic. Can someone out there help me out and pick it apart, eliminate that laptop, and drop in a nice image of the MacBook Pro instead, while keeping all the rest the same (colors, border, etc.)? Please e-mail your results to my blog address, on the sidebar at the left. If there are (hopefully) multiple results, I'll either pick my favorite, or rotate them every month or so. I don't have anything to offer as payment, but the thanks of a grateful blogger.

Videogames: Fabulous at 40

Before all the computer and console games of today, there was a humble beginning, where a videogame called "Pong" ruled. Someone had to come up with the original idea, of course. Someone had to take a look at a relatively new technology (television), now in homes all over the country, and wonder if it would be possible to bring games into those houses, over the TV.

The year was 1967. Ralph Baer was ready to make history.

Apple on Tuesday updated its consumer MacBook computers adding faster processors, 1GB RAM and larger hard drives in all models.

The new MacBooks come in three models — a white 2.0GHz and 2.16GHz, and a black 2.16 GHz model. All of the MacBooks include a built-in iSight video camera and the latest generation of 802.11n wireless networking. The notebooks also come with iLife ‘06 and Mac OS X 10.4.9 Tiger.

Woohoo...now we're cooking. As for those of you who just bought a new 'book in the last week or so, I feel your pain. The one drawback to Apple being so tight-lipped about what's in the pipeline.

The search giant carried out in-depth research on 4.5 million websites and found one in 10 web pages could successfully launch a 'drive-by-download' - such as a Trojan - onto a user's computer.

Microsoft has finally released an update for Windows Vista that fixes the lingering compatibility issues with Apple's iPod. Available first in late March, the final version of the free update is for users worldwide and works with the latest version of Apple iTunes to correct an issue that caused some iPods to become corrupted when ejecting them using Windows Explorer or the "Safely Remove Hardware" function in the System Tray, the company said.

Your Response to Joost Invites, and Feedback in General

I just want to take a moment and say "hello" to all the new contacts I've made through e-mail the last day or so, since I began offering the Joost invites; the response has been overwhelming! I'd love to think that all of you read this blog religiously, and were just waiting for word from me when they would become available, but I'm not quite that naive. I know many of you may have just typed "Joost" into your favorite search engine, and wound up here. That's fine too -- I hope you'll at least hang around for a few minutes, and browse a few pages while you're here. There's plenty to interest a Mac fan, but the websites I comment on here are, of course, usually platform-agnostic.

Secondly, I wanted to say that I really encourage you to drop me a line at the e-mail address on the sidebar to the right. I didn't really think an e-mail account for the blog would be necessary, as I figured that I would respond to any questions or comments in the Comment section for each post. However, I got to thinking about it, and there are times when you may not necessarily want to post your question out there for all to see, and so I created the Gmail account to handle both the requests for Joost invites, but also to open up the floor to you to get in touch with me. What I'd particularly like to see are your suggestions for content on the page, especially any cool web pages you've been browsing lately. It would be great if it had a Mac theme to it, but any website is game -- fun, quirky, and interesting content tops anyone's list. I will reply to your e-mail asking for your permission to blog your find if it looks good, and then credit you in the post. Just in the last few days, I've received e-mails from the far corners of the globe, to right in my backyard -- Canada, Australia, New York, and Ohio, to name a few -- and I'm always looking forward to meeting new friends.

Finally, I never want to be one of those bloggers who need to be away from their blogs for a while, and get on to post "sorry I haven't blogged in a while; this happened, then this, then blah, blah, blah..." I'll say this once, and be done with it. I'd blog all day long if I could, but my job as a Help Desk Analyst is cyclical in nature, as I work for a state university here in Ohio. As a result, as the school year goes along, there will be times when I am swamped and simply don't have the time to post much at all, then there are other times when you'll see multiple posts from me on the same day. That's just the nature of the job. Believe me, my motto could be "I'd rather be posting" Those of you that have followed this blog for any length of time know that. I just wanted it on the record. I'm always around somewhere, just waiting to get some time to post.

Hello. You may have seen the small banner near the bottom-left of this blog mentioning a service called Joost. I have been a beta tester for it almost since its inception, and it's coming along pretty well.

What is Joost, you say? Well, in a nutshell, it's a website where you can view TV programs in much the same way that you might flip channels on your TV at home. There is content by some of the big cable companies, like MTV, National Geographic, and Cartoon Network, amongst others. What it isn't is live TV -- you aren't going to be able to view live network shows. But the limited content they have right now is fun, and more is being added all the time.

A picture-editing website for the rest of us. While I love my Mac, and iPhoto for doing just about anything to my photos after I bring them in from my digital camera, sometimes I'm away from the Mac, and want to manipulate a photo somehow. Picnik (currently in beta) allows you to do some nice editing -- cropping, re-sizing, rotating -- and for now, you can also apply some filtering. I understand that some filters may be available to premium subscribers later, but for now that part is free; the basic editing features will remain free. Finally, once you get the picture the way you like, you can save it back to your computer. Neato! Create a free account, and they'll update you as the site progresses.

Here's a little Friday fun in honor of the upcoming weekend. I got tipped to this via the TUAW. It's a plug-in to use with iTunes called DockArt, and it does something pretty cool when you install it. It simply displays the album cover art (if you have it) of the iTunes track currently playing in your dock. Pretty sweet, huh? Oh, and it's free. Gotta have, now.

System requirements listed for the plugin are: iTunes 4.1 or higher, and QuickTime 6.4 or higher. Apparently, the latest version available does work with the latest release of iTunes, 7.1

Advice For The PC-to-Mac Switchers

If you've recently made the switch to an Apple Mac after using Windows exclusively, or even if you've just added a Mac to the fold, you may feel like you'll never learn your way around the system. Everything seems so foreign, and you think to yourself "Wow, I didn't think the learning curve was gonna be this steep!" Relax. Take a breath. Although doing things the "Mac way" takes a little time to learn, you'll be a pro in no time. You actually know more than you think from your Win ways, it just has a slightly different spin on a Mac.

I work at the Help Desk for a university in Ohio, and the student workers at our desk sometimes ask me to look over resumes they are constructing, some for the first time. They are interested in jobs in IT, but are unsure how to construct a useful techie resume. I came across this blog post today from someone in the industry, who looks at tons of these types of resumes all the time. He uses the name Rands, but it's not his real name. As he explains in his 'About' section:

My personal weblog. No, Rands is not my real name. I use my real name as a full time engineering manager of teams that designs phenomenal software. Yeah, that's me in the logo. I hadn't shaved in some time. My hair is longer now.
I've been writing here since April of 2002. I tend to write about four significant pieces a month, but changes depending on shipping schedules. Content varies from thoughts of being an engineering manager in Silicon Valley to writing to Vegas.

He passes on some interesting insights into what he's looking for in a techie resume, such as:

The terrifying reality regarding your resume is that for all the many hours you put into fine-tuning, you've got 30 seconds to make an impression on me. Maybe less.

Creating An OS X-Bootable Flash Drive

When it comes to troubleshooting hardware and software problems, you usually would like to keep the main hard drive of your system free, so that you can run diagnostic programs on it. Hard to do when you need to boot from that main hard drive. Having a version of the operating system on a flash drive would be ideal. The folks over in Windows XP-land have had this option available to them for a while, but no well-presented solution had been available for us on the OS X-continent. Until now.

Brad Bergeron explains in this blog post how you can create a bootable version of OS X on your own flash drive. Besides the fact that you can troubleshoot with it, you can also pop it in someone else's Mac, choose the flash drive for startup, and work within your own environment on apps and docs. Brad says you'll need at least a 1 GB flash drive to make it happen, but with the prices of flash drives coming down every day, I'd say 2 GB or better would get you more elbow room. Flash drives run faster, cooler, and might just help you out in a pinch someday. I'm going to create one myself as soon as possible.

I came across this blog on the way to something else entirely today. You know how that goes? Of course you do. In essence, that's what this whole blog is about, fun snippets of info I find on the web. But it's even more fun when I find it unintentionally, then I can't tear my eyes away from it until I read a the majority of this new page I'm on.

So it was when I found Clive Thompson's blog. From his intro, he writes on:

[...] science, technology, and culture. This blog collects weird research I'm running into, and musings thereon.

He also writes occasional articles for the New York Times and Wired, amongst others. His writing style is fresh and breezy, and he explains complex science concepts in easy-to-understand language. He recently posted on a medical study of sword-swallowing injuries, and one on a study about how just thinking about losing weight might help the body actually lose weight. Not all of these are original by him -- he finds interesting and unique articles from all around the web. But wow, if it isn't a compelling read. Go check it out yourself.

Every now and then you're putting together a flier or other advertisement, and want to crank the creativity up a bit by using a font different than the same-old, same-old. I keep looking out for free font sites, and there are a few out there. Here's a good recent find. 9800 free true-type fonts. You can type in a line of text to see how it appears, and then click to download the font to your system. Once downloaded, us Mac folks will need to drop the .ttf file into your hard drive > Library > Fonts folder. You Windows folks should know what to do with yours ;)

"Essential" Mac Apps

Every now and then, a Mac fan comes up with a list of essential, "must-have" applications that all true Macolytes should have on their systems. I'm sure the same goes for the Windows crew as well, but you'd have to check their blogs to be sure. In any case, a good app-list came up on a blog, and a lot of folks commented on the list, but then the list stayed stagnant, and some of the app pages disappeared. That's where Peter Baer Galvin stepped in, on his Peter Baer Galvin's Blog:

Mac Specialist posted a great list of essential Mac OS X Applications here, and it caused lots of discussion on the topic. Unfortunately they never revised the list based on this input and now it takes quite a lot of effort to navigate through the list and all the comments. I thought I’d take a run at creating a new “consensus” list starting from theirs and adding all of the other input.

And so he did. I believe I have even posted a Mac app list here at least once, but if you want a great list of goodies to potentially use on your Mac, I'd take a gander at the list he's put together.

Major life events compel us to mark them in a way that you can easily describe what you were doing at that point. Remember the Challenger disaster? Hurricane Katrina? The Stock Market crash? ...and so on. One of the most indelible moments in time if you happen to be a Baby Boomer was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. I remember hearing adults talk about this time when I was growing up, and they always said they remembered where they were, what they were doing, even the topic of the conversation when they heard the awful news.

Hello, video game fans. Having grown up in the 70's myself, I've been around gaming consoles since the early, pre-Atari 2600 days. I remember getting one from Sears that had ping-pong and hockey on it, and my siblings and I were in heaven...then came the Atari 2600, and it blew our socks off.

But I digress. If you're into perusing the history of video game consoles, and perhaps reminiscing over an old console system you or a friend used to own, then look no further than the Ultimate Console Database, collecting information from every system the author could get his hands on. He's still working on some sections, so your input is vital if you owned some of these old systems. But it is amazing what is here. I remember my nephew having a 3-D, short-lived version of the GameBoy called 'VirtualBoy' -- it's here. MacWorld Expo Keynote Wrap-Up: AppleTV and iPhone

Yes, it was an exciting time on January 9th at the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco, as Steve Jobs rolled out two new technologies that Apple has been working on during his keynote speech. Interestingly enough, this didn't include any new computer hardware or software releases (no new laptops, desktops, or any news on the next version of the OS software, code-named Leopard). Instead, Steve started with news about how well the iPod is doing around the world, and that 85 songs a *second* are being sold on iTunes. He also mentioned that TV shows are selling well, and that Paramount Studios have now come on board, joining the Walt Disney Company in selling full-length movies over iTunes.

He then moved into speaking about a technology that he briefly introduced this past fall called iTV (now officially launched as AppleTV). This is something that owners of big-screen TVs will enjoy. It's a square, smallish box that sits near your TV, and has all sorts of audio and video out, so you can connect it to your home theater sounds system and your big-screen HD TV. It has a 40GB hard drive in it, and its primary function is to take content from your Mac (music, movies, photos), and wirelessly broadcast it through AppleTV and onto your TV. It comes with a simple remote that allows you to, for example, get on your laptop/desktop, go to iTunes, browse and buy a movie online, then beam it to AppleTV, where you can then relax on the sofa while the movie plays on your big-screen TV. Same goes for listening to music through your stereo speakers, and showing cool photo presentations. Not bad, though this is something I would definitely wait for until you can afford a big-screen HDTV to justify the cost.

Then Steve moved on to the big announcement of the day. He slyly introduced it by saying "today, Apple is pleased to announce three new technologies that we think will change the world, and the industry. One is a new widescreen iPod with touch controls; one is a new mobile phone, and one is a breakthrough Internet communications device with email, web browsing, maps, and searching." Then he went on to drop the bomb. It was all in the same device. Today, Apple introduced the iPhone.

To describe it here would take multiple paragraphs, so please make sure to check it out online. But basically, it's a mobile phone (the carrier is Cingular) that is all one big screen that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. There are no physical, plastic buttons on the phone, but instead, it uses a touch technology and menus displayed on-screen. It also is an iPod, ready to play songs from your iTunes connection, because it uses a dock to connect itself to iTunes just like your iPod does now. It can do email, and it can browse the web. It has built-in wireless available, that kicks in automatically whenever you're near a WiFi connection. You can browse web pages, check forecasts, view satellite maps, do Google searches, and more. All with a minimum of fuss to get to anything. It even has a built-in 2 megapixel camera on the back. They will begin shipping the phone this June, though both the Apple Store and Cingular stores. There will be two configurations at the start -- a 4GB and an 8GB version. I wouldn't be surprised to see larger hard drives on future versions. Prices will be $499 and $599, respectively, with a 2-year contract through Cingular. Check it out online...it's truly a breakthrough device.

Yes, you heard correctly. In order to bring more publicity to Mac software developers, the Mac App A Day website is going to be releasing a new Mac app for free each night starting December 1st and continuing throughout the month, plus one more on New Year's Day. These will either be entirely free, or will have a trial period that has been greatly extended. The biggest problem will be remembering to visit the site each day! No titles have been announced, so we'll all find out together. Can I get a w00t w00t for free stuff?

Welcome to November, all...mmm, I can almost smell that turkey cooking. Here's one for all the Firefox browser fans out there (yours truly, of course...and you have upgraded to FF 2.0, right?). One of the nice features of the way FF is put together is how you can add functionality to the browser very easily by just downloading and installing an "extension" in FF talk. Need an FTP client? Weather forecast? Want to know when a new GMail message arrives? There's a FF extension for that.

Well, econsultant.com has put together a pretty comprehensive list of FF extensions, sorted by category. I haven't tested any, but I don't think FF v2.0 should have any problems with them. At most, it may prompt you to download the latest version of the extension.

I don't want to date myself here, but it was a Really Big Deal (tm) when, as a kid, I got for a Christmas present one year the Atari 2600 game console that I had been bugging my parents for. I would argue that everything you're playing on a game console today owes its start to the 2600. And if you bought one, there was one game that was a must-buy. That game was Adventure. The search for the chalice took you through castles, mazes, and encounters with deadly dragons and a psychotic bat.

Well, now you can find out for yourself what it was all about, as Adventure has been re-created online. Just click on the console buttons (just like on the actual system!) to launch your game, and remember to use the arrow keys to move around.

:sigh: ...when they talk about "back in the day", this was what it means for me.

Songbird 0.2 Version Released: MP3 Player and More

Songbird is an upcoming media player that owes much of its overall look to iTunes. However, whereas Songbird will play mp3s from your music library, it also goes beyond that functionality in what the site describes as a mashup between a "desktop Web player, a digital jukebox, and Web browser". Using built-in web pages listing mp3s, you can cruise to the webpage, see the music files as links, and then drag those files directly over into the library. Using the web browser aspect, you can add other bookmarks to music-hosting sites. You can also find and play videos. And oh yes, it's cross-platform capable -- Macs, Windows and Linux can all join in the fun.

Google Docs and Spreadsheets: No OS Needed

Think about working in the the two arguably biggest applications in the Microsoft Office Suite: Word and Excel. Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't have to worry about what computer you used to create the document or spreadsheet, whether Windows, Mac, or other? What if you didn't have to worry about where you stored that document -- what if you could store it online?

Well, that time has come. Google has offered for a while a service called Google Spreadsheets, and now they have just added Google Docs. Docs was originally a product from a company called Writely, which was acquired by Google, and now these two applications have been released together at docs.google.com. To take full advantage, you'll need to have signed up for a free Google account -- you've done that already, right?

Once there, you'll see what genius is really behind these two apps, although I admit that I use Docs more than Spreadsheets right now. Everything is stored online. You don't have to worry what OS you are running -- Mac, Windows, Linux -- as long as you can get to a web browser and on the internet, you can get to your stuff. All the familiar tools are there, plus more...you can now collaborate with others, giving them access via email address to your docs online so that they can make additions and revisions if needed. You can even upload Word and Excel docs you already have somewhere on your hard drive, and start keeping them on Google Docs & Spreadsheets. And finally, in what may be the coolest part, you can Publish your doc or spreadsheet online or on your blog. If you go the online route, your doc is assigned its own URL on google.com that you can share with friends, family, and colleagues. Or, you can post it directly to your blog.

I'm just scratching the surface here. So go check it out for yourself, and see what you can accomplish in these apps when you break the bond tying them to your operating system.

Dead iPod? Try Charging It...

I've linked to great articles in the Small Dog Electronics newsletters that I receive, so rather than explain who they are again, I'll just let you know that today's snippet deals with customers who bring in supposedly "dead" iPods, only to have Small Dog techs discover that what they really needed was a good, long, charging. I'll let Matt from Small Dog take it from here:

In processing iPod returns, many times the problem is simply a fully
depleted battery. Customers report that the iPod does not respond
when plugged into a wall charger or the computer, but instead
displays a battery icon with one bar that does not flash. In most
cases, leaving the iPod to charge for 30-60 minutes will revive it.
If this doesn't help, though, Apple outlines five steps to take (the
five Rs):

1. Reset your iPod.
2. Retry with a different USB port.
3. Restart your computer.
4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.
5. Restore you iPod.

While we're talking about batteries, it never hurts to emphasize
calibration. After using your battery for a while, it's possible
you'll notice reduced capacity. Calibration restores the battery to
its full functionality. For iBooks, PowerBook G4, and iPod, plug the
machine in and wait for it to fully charge. On laptops, wait for the
ring on the power adapter to turn green; on iPods, wait until the
screen indicates "Charged." Now, disconnect the battery and run your
computer or iPod until it goes to sleep. Finally, plug it back in
and fully charge again.

The procedure is slightly different for the very last generation
PowerBook G4 (with the dual-layer SuperDrive and high-res screen),
MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Pro (17-inch). First, fully charge
the machine. Once fully charged, allow the battery to "rest" for at
least two hours, then disconnect the power and run it until the
machine goes to sleep. Turn the computer off, or let it sleep, for
at least five hours, then fully recharge.

Along these lines, iPod batteries tend not to last as long as laptop
batteries. If your iPod is more than a year old, Apple will not
cover replacement of the battery...but Small Dog can help. You can
order replacement batteries for every kind of iPod for self-
installation (we'll send you instructions and an envelope to send us
the old battery for proper disposal) or mail your iPod to us for
professional installation.

Free is good, my friends...so let's call it Free Friday. One of the cool things Apple does in its online iTunes Music Store (ITMS) is offer a free music single each week that you can download to your iTunes and iPod. Recently, they've also offered some free movie and TV downloads. Problem is, I can never remember from week to week to get over there and find out what the free download is for that particular week.

Well, someone else apparently had the same problem as well, and decided to do something about it. Voila, the website Get Free Downloads on the iTunes Store was born. When you visit, you'll see lists of what has been recently offered for free at the ITMS, with buttons in front of each selection, leading you to its location in the store. Pretty cool! When it comes to enhancing your music collection, or perhaps trying a new music group or style, this site keeps your free options open.

Hidden Tetris in Mac OS X

I have mentioned this here before, but if you're a Mac user, firstly, congratulations ;^) ...secondly, a great small business in Vermont that caters to Mac users (and has a great web presence) is Small Dog Electronics [Disclaimer: I am not associated with Small Dog in any way, other than a satisfied customer].

One of the niceties they offer is a few tech newsletters, which I subscribe to. The latest edition has two stories I'd like to reproduce here, and this one is about the game of Tetris hidden right within the operating system -- Mac OS X. From the newsletter, Tech Tails #333:

[...]According to Wikipedia, Tetris was invented by Alexey Pazhitnov at the Soviet
Academy of Sciences at their Computer Center in Moscow.

Now, like the political messages possibly hidden in Shostakovich’s
music, Tetris is hidden in OS X’s UNIX subsystem. You can unveil and
play Tetris by browsing Applications Folder > Utilities Folder >
Terminal. Type “emacs” and click enter. Now simultaneously press
the “ESC” and “X” keys. Now type “Tetris” without the
quotations. Use the arrow keys to rotate and move the falling Tetris
blocks. Press the spacebar to make the blocks fall.

A whole bunch of games are hidden in emacs in your Macs terminal. To
see the rest of the games, open the Terminal application, and type:

“ls /usr/share/emacs/21.2/lisp
/play” again, without the quotations.

To play these games, repeat the steps above for launching Tetris,
except substitute the other game’s name for Tetris. To quit emacs,
simultaneously hold down the control and X keys, and then
simultaneously hold down the control and C keys.

As always, be careful when you are using the Terminal application!

How could I forget Software for Starving Students (SSS)? Apparently, very easily. Same idea -- free software for Macs or Windows, and you can download the software immediately with a bit-torrent client, or via direct download (defintely try bit-torrent, if feasible, due to file size). Play Chess And Watch the A.I. Think

For those of you out there who love chess, here's a fascinating website, Thinking Machine 4. From the intro:

Thinking Machine 4 explores the invisible, elusive nature of thought. Play chess against a transparent intelligence, its evolving thought process visible on the board before you.

The artwork is an artificial intelligence program, ready to play chess with the viewer. If the viewer confronts the program, the computer's thought process is sketched on screen as it plays. A map is created from the traces of literally thousands of possible futures as the program tries to decide its best move. Those traces become a key to the invisible lines of force in the game as well as a window into the spirit of a thinking machine.

I am by no means a good chess player, but it was interesting watching the A.I. sketch out its thought processes.

New Blog Layout via Beta Blogger

Hello there, K A C H U P fans. You may notice that the layout of my blog has changed. This is because I am one of the folks Blogger invited to their beta.blogger.com party, and so I 'updated' my blog to experience some of the upgrade features. It's pretty nice looking so far, and it does retain your previous template settings, so if all goes awry, I can hopefully revert back to my old layout. A major item I do see missing right now is the ability to edit the raw HTML so that I can put some of my own custom elements back in, like my page count and other tags. When that becomes available, I'll add them back. Stay tuned.

With these tools, you can select up to 98 photos, lay them out in a poster-size contact sheet of 30" x 20", then ultimately use iPhoto's built-in Kodak Print Service to order your poster. Too cool -- looks like something you'd find in the techie DIY "Make" magazine, but for Macs. It's all thanks to Mike Matas.

Mac OS X Picasa Web Album Uploader

Google has had for a while now a service called Picasa that allows you to post photos online via Google, and organize them into albums, share them with others, etc. Very nice -- unless you were a Mac user. Well, that has been rectified as of today. The latest post to the Google Blog mentions, in part:

I'm happy to tell you about the release of Picasa Web Albums Uploaders (beta, of course) for Mac OS X. Picasa Web Albums makes it simple to share photos with friends and family, and now we've made it even easier on the Mac. This new download comes with two handy tools for uploading photos: There's a plug-in for uploading your pics within iPhoto. If you don't use iPhoto, or just want to upload the occasional picture, just drag your photos into the provided standalone app and click Upload. Either way, I can't wait for my fellow Mac users to showcase their talents.

I wanted to mention a great hobby my wife and I have been involved in for two years or so now, called Geocaching. Certainly you've heard of it, yes?

No? OK, in a nutshell, it's like a world-wide scavenger hunt, organized online the best by the folks at Groundspeak, via their website, Geocaching.com. Legend has it that, many years back, in Seattle, one individual was contemplating the idea that this new GPS technology could find practically any position on earth, if you knew the coordinates to punch in to your GPS receiver. He thought it might be fun to take a container with some trinkets in it, hide it out of plain site, post the coordinates on the internet, and have friends with GPS receivers try to find the cache. They did, and a new sport was born (please bear with me; this tale is from memory, and I'm sure greatly generalized...but the idea is the same). UPDATE: Read how it all got started in 2000 here.

Today, this sport has boomed, with caches hidden all over the country, in every state, and now around the world as well. The stated goal is to help folks get out, see the country, and travel to places you might not otherwise -- a scenic view, a fantastic campsite, a historical site. No digging is involved...the cache container is generally about the size of a Tupperware food storage container, something that is dry, and contains a log book for the cacher to log their visit, and occasionally toys or other trinkets to trade.

I am skipping over mountains of details here, and I really encourage you to visit the geocaching website and read all about it. Back to the point of this post, though...once you create an account, you can search for caches anywhere in the world to find (surprise yourself by searching around your town -- you'll be flabbergasted at how many are practically in your own backyard), and once you find a particular cache, you come back to the website, and log your visit online. Then they update your stats with how many you've found, and how many you've hidden yourself. They then have a way to generate the code to be able to post your stats 'banner' online, and that's what I did today ;)

You'll note that our total is rather low. One good reason for this...I use a power wheelchair to get around, so my wife and I try to filter out the caches that seem accessible to someone in a wheelchair like me. One method they employ is to rate caches from 1 to 5 in both difficulty of the hide, and difficulty of the terrain. I usually can get to most caches whose terrain difficulty is rated 1 or 1.5.

But enough about us...you can track our stats by the new little badge I posted here, but what's stopping you? If I can do it, anyone can! Get yourself a decent GPS receiver (some are available for $100 or so), and the forums on geocaching.com devote entire areas to discussing different GPS receivers. Once in hand, register yourself on geocaching.com, and then get out there!

For all you Google lovers out there...sometimes, you want to really refine your search, but you're not sure what different parameters you can define. You do know about what they call "Advanced Operators", right? These are ways to specify your search on Google.

For example, if you wanted to search for the definition of the word 'dictionary', instead of just typing the word 'dictionary' in the Google search bar (which will bring up websites featuring that word), you can type in 'define: dictionary' (without the quotes), which then does a lookup on the definition of the word, and returns those results. Similarly, you can type in 'movie: Superman Returns' and get back movie reviews and showtimes. Pretty neat, eh? Well, this only scratches the surface. And yes, there are places on google.com itself to find information on the available operators...but, in true 'net community-goodness fashion, Nancy Blachman has done the work for us, and come up with a cheat sheet that you can print out, and have handy for your next Google search. Clicking on the text near the top of the page ('Google Guide', or the 'Quick Reference...' title) takes you to more in-depth webpages on Google searching.

One of my passions is film, and animation in particular. In the art house theaters that I encountered in my college years, one of the treats was when an animation festival was slated to appear. In these, many works by directors you might know (but many more by folks you didn't know) would be displayed, one after the other. The producers would string together enough shorts to make an overall program length of an hour and a half or so.

One of the most consistently funny animation groups were the ones sponsored by the National Film Board of Canada. Do titles like "Blackfly" or "The Balgonie Birdman" ring a bell? No? I grew up in the late 60s and early 70s. Back then, it seemed like every kid, at one point in their kidhood, was presented with an Etch-A-Sketch as a gift. It was fantastic how you could manipulate two small knobs and produce an etching in silver powder that was your own personal masterpiece...until a sibling or some other individual with no conception of fine art grabbed your one-of-a-kind design, and shook it away into so many particles of inspirational dust again. Back to the tabula rasa.

Well, there's playing with an Etch-A-Sketch, and then there's mastering it. Don't think you can really create art on one? Check out the work of George Vlosich III on his website Etched In Time. You will be amazed. And you will find a new definition of the word "patience".

Misheard Song Lyrics

By now, I'm sure many of you have heard about the books and desk calendars that feature misheard song lyrics. It all started in a collection called "'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy", a goof on Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix. I got my sister a desk calendar for this year featuring a different misheard lyric each day, and some will have you in tears, they are so funny.

Well, I read something the other day online somewhere (nice and vague, huh?) that reminded me to check out the website. And so I did. It had been a while since I visited, and the site looks much nicer and has more interactivity than it did before. Take a look! You can look up lyrics by using the alphabetic index, or you can click on "Grab a random lyric", and see what random goodness is in store. Either way, it's a great way to find out what other people *thought* they heard. Probably the best part is, you can submit misheard lyrics yourself! Enjoy.

Frogger Croaks Again

So I have this younger sister. When we were growing up (not to give away our ages), we were all about the Atari 2600 game console. Two of my sister's favorite arcade games were Space Invaders and Frogger. When they came to the Atari, she was in heaven. But, then we all grow up, and you lose your liking for kid stuff like that.

Macgamestore.com, which sells boxed and downloadable versions of commercial and casual games, has launched a free Web-based game service that lets you play fifteen different games online without paying a dime.

The games simply require a Java-capable browser, including Safari and Firefox. They’re Web versions of popular casual games that Macgamestore.com also sells, including Mystery Case Files: Huntsville and Fish Tycoon, as well as “classic” arcade games like Space Invaders and Asteroids.

Today, March 24, 2006, is an annivesary for our platform of choice. For it was five years ago today that the operating system that replaced the venerable OS 9 on the Mac debuted, it was called Mac OS X, and it was good.

Finally bringing the stability of the UNIX world to its underpinnings, protected memory areas for applications, and too many more to list, it revolutionized Macs forever, and paved the way for other important changes in software and hardware design and implementation.

John Siracusa of arstechnica.com, who by his own admission has arguably written the most words on the subject of OS X, gives us a interesting read on the auspicious occasion.

Camino 1.0 Mac Web Browser Released

For all you Mac-lovers out there...the Mozilla organization released v1.0 of their Camino web browser this past week. The Tech Tails newsletter I receive from Small Dog Electronics does a better job explaining it:

Many of you are probably familiar with Mozilla FireFox. It is one of the best browsers around for Windows, OS X, and Linux. Well, Mozilla also has a browser for OS X only, Camino, which is a bit more lightweight then FireFox.

Camino has been in beta for quite some time. This past week they finally released version 1.0. The new version includes an updated download manager and better built-in ad-blocking. Camino also works with other OS X applications such as Address Book, Keychain, Finder, and Bonjour. Like FireFox, it supports tabbed browsing so you don't need to have ten windows open when you're surfing the web.

Camino is an open source project, meaning users all over the world can work on this project and help make Camino a better web browser. Camino is a universal binary, so it will work nice and fast on the new Intel Macs.

I've downloaded it on my Mac, and it has been smooth as silk so far. Give it a try!

Cranky Customers Unite!

I have been a fan of Randy Cassingham's writing for some time now -- years, in fact. What, you don't know him? You may have run across his work if you ever received an email forward with a list of 'funny lawsuits' or 'really true stories', because the person who sent them to you is sending on, many times without attribution, Randy's work.

The two mailing lists I mention are actually the Stella Awards, for "any wild, outrageous, or ridiculous lawsuits", and This Is True, which "reports on bizarre-but-true news items from legitimate newspapers from around the world (never "tabloids")". Randy is a syndicated Colorado humorist, and his commentaries on this stuff are priceless, as well.

I mention his past work to really push his latest effort, Cranky Customer, True Tales of Customer Service Incompetence. My day job deals with customer service, and if yours does as well, then you know how it is when you try to be the best at dealing with people day in and out, then find awful customer service people dealing with you. We all have horror stories about bad CS reps and companies, don't we? Well, now Mr. Cunningham has taken on the topic with his newest website, and the topics have already been drawing some good responses. Companies that won't stop calling, packaging you can't break into, bad phone etiquette -- you get the picture. First Mac Virus/Trojan Ever? Negatory...

I just had to get my two cents in on all the furor over what was supposedly reported as "the first new virus or trojan horse" to hit the Mac OS X platform. As I suspected, all the alarmists were up in arms about something that turned out to be quite the disappointment for them in the end.

I subscribe to a wonderful email newsletter from a company called Small Dog Electronics, that has supported Macs for many years. I am not associated with them in any way, except as a satisfied customer. Anyhow, the newsletter I want to quote from is called "Kibbles & Bytes #453", and they explain the whole brouhaha better than I could:

Oompa Loompa Trojans?

The blogs were abuzz with news of what some called the first "virus"
for Mac OS X, which masks itself as the latest pictures of the next
version of Mac OS X, Leopard. If you download the file
"lastestpics.tgz" and enter your password to uncompress and run it,
it would attempt to send the file to everyone in your iChat buddy list.

Contrary to some reports, this is not a virus. It requires user
action to download, decompress, and launch the program. I don't know
about you, but I don't think I would ever download a file with the
".tgz" extension. That screams WATCH OUT! You cannot be infected
with this malicious software unless you intentionally download the
file (or get it via email or iChat direct transfer). Then you would
have to double-click on the generic icon to decompress it and then
double-click on the resulting file. Depending on how you have your
system preferences set up, you would probably have to enter your
admin password,too.

You can't "catch" this virus — you have to go through all those
steps. Always remember that it is important to understand what you
are downloading. Be cautious about running applications if you are
unsure of their origins. It is easy to make a file that would erase
your hard drive if you answer "yes" when Mac OS X asks you if you
want to erase your hard drive.

Symantec, which has a vested interest in discovering security issues
so they can sell you some software, has classified this Oompa Loompa
Trojan as a category 1 threat (on at 5-point scale with 5 being the
most serious threat).

So, rest safe, Mac fans...your platfrom is as safe as ever, and can still leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Writing Tips For Non-Writers

I happen to be from a family that really knows how to write. I have a sister who is a published author, and my wife has the next, great romance novel under wraps, and just needs to spill the words out on paper. But, all of us siblings (six total) seem to have been comfortable with writing, whether cards, letters, assignments, or e-mails. I believe that we were all influenced by my mother, who not only liked to write notes, cards and letters (as she still does today), but occasionally kept little travel journals on our family trips. I also claim her as my direct influence on doodling when I talk to someone on the phone. But, I digress.

For those among us who could use a few tips to straighten up our writing style from time to time, I present this wonderful site I came across from a blog called "Whatever". Fastr - A Flickr Game

Most of you already know about Flickr, a website where you can create an account and share photos with the world. Well, as you might expect, Flickr has amassed quite a collection of photos over time. What else can you do with these photos besides view them? Play a game with them, of course!

Fastr is a game that bases itself on the fact that, when you save a photo to Flickr, you can also add one or more 'tags' to describe the image, so a picture you upload of your tuxedo cat could be tagged 'cat', 'tux', 'tuxedo cat', 'black and white', etc. In this game, Fastr will present a series of ten photos. Each photo is presented about 5 seconds apart. Your job (after typing a name for yourself), is to enter a guess for what word you think all the images shown were tagged with. If you type a word and it is correct, you get points (from 1 - 10) based on how quickly you identified the tag (got it right after the first photo? 10 points. 2nd photo? 9 points, etc.). If not, type another guess. Keep typing until either all ten photos are shown, or you guess correctly. You'll know when you get it right; you immediately win the points you were entitled to. Then it starts with a new series of photos. You see your score, with other players, on the left of the screen. After a set number of rounds, the game ends, then starts a fresh round and clears the scores.

It took me much longer to describe it here than it takes to just jump in and start playing. Good luck, and have fun! If you see a player called 'Kachup', you're up against me!

Kaboodle: Saving and Commenting on Websites

I just came across Kaboodle this week. It makes use of the idea of "social" sites on the 'net, where not only can you get something out of the site, but you can invite others to share their opinions as well.

With Kaboodle, you add a toolbar to your browser window, with two buttons: Add to Kaboodle , and My Kaboodle. Then you're ready to start Kaboodling! OK, ummm...what's that? OK, check it out...

You're on the web. You come across a page you think is particularly nifty. You click on your 'Add to Kaboodle' button. Kaboodle then creates a sumamry of the page. You can then come back to it at any time by clicking on the 'My Kaboodle' button. Also, at the time the page summary is created, you can add notes. Finally, on the Kaboodle site, there is a Share Page option that allows you to share what pages you're Kaboodling with the world. Then, I could see that page, add my own comments, and so on. That's the "social" part of the process.

Atari 2600 Tank Combat Rides Again

Ahh, the good old days...remember back in the 70's, when the coolest videogame console around was the Atari 2600? ...um...or am I really dating myself now? In any case, the console shipped initially with the iconic game "Combat". Using tanks and airplanes, you tried to take out your opponent before they did the same to you. The tank option was always my favorite. You'd each start at opposite corners of a maze, then make your way to a strategic spot where you could rain turret fire down on your opponent...

Sorry, got lost there in the moment. Anyway, my point is this...some kind soul has brought back the Atari 2600 Combat game, programmed in Java, and renamed as TurboTanks. You can now play against a computer opponent using your browser. Game on!

Yep...it was this very day, 22 years ago, when we learned why "1984 won't be like 1984". The now-mythic Super Bowl ad that introduced the Mac also introduced us to the idea of commercials during the big game as an event unto themselves. But, at the core of it all, was this new computer. Small. Personal. And with some new pointing device called a "mouse". MacDailyNews has a great article on the commemoration, with links to the "1984" commercial and a true rarity -- a movie where a very young Steve Jobs introduces the Mac at Cupertino's Flint Center.
